BBS: The Documentary

10:19 AM

I ran into an article on Wired about BBS: The Documentary. It filled me with great nostalgia. From there I actually discovered this list of BBS's in my old area code. That just brought the memories flooding back. Is anyone up for a little Trade Wars 2002? Or maybe you'd prefer Land of Devestation? Perhaps Legend of the Red Dragon, though I prefered Usurper. And though I never got into it, I seem to remember Wronowski and Moradi being big into Solar Realms Elite.

Tell me why we aren't doing this?

11:20 AM

Read this article and explain to me why we aren't pushing this now? If we invest in technology like, biodiesel, and nuclear power; we could end our dependecy on fossil fuels in less than 20 years. But what about the 'hydrogen economy' you ask? Well hydrogen can be made pretty efficiently from ethanol in small batches... like at a filling station, or in a car. That gets us around that pesky problem of how we build the whole infastructure to deliver hydrogen. The first oil company that commits to this is going to find themselves exceedingly wealthy in the future.

My rant for today

10:46 AM

I just read this article from Time. Many people have already voiced an opinion on it (Andrew Sullivan for one), but I thought I'd give my two cents. Here is a quote from the article:

It seems perfectly O.K. for secularists to impose their secular views on America, such as, say, legalized abortion or gay marriage. But when someone takes the contrary view, all of a sudden he is trying to impose his view on you. And if that contrary view happens to be rooted in Scripture or some kind of religious belief system, the very public advocacy of that view becomes a violation of the U.S. constitutional order.

On the surface it sounds logical, and that's what so dangerous about this and so many other arguments the fundies make.

Check this out...

12:39 PM

The Sports Guy is back with a new mailbag and it's pretty freaking funny. Give it a read.

Also, PopMatters has posted an interview with an acting god, Bruce Campbell. Which reminds me, when is Briscoe County Jr. coming out on DVD?? Is the nostaligia just not there yet for early 90's television?

I am Boba Fett

10:18 PM

Take this quiz and see who you are. I'm a little upset that I don't get a light saber. And that Sarlacc business is kind of weak. But you could do a lot worse than good old Boba!

Star Wars - Spoilers Included!

10:14 AM

It's time for my spoiler filled reaction to ROTS (And even though people would like me to stop, I will continue to use acronyms). This is hard for me to write because for as much as I loved the movie, it has greatly depressed me. The end of Star Wars is like the end of my childhood. I've had to face the fact that I truly am an adult. I know that might seem like crazy talk coming from someone approaching 30 and soon to be married, but at every point in my life when I've had to face growing up (graduations, real jobs, layoffs, car payments, engagement, marriage, etc) I've always had Star Wars to fall back on. It always made me feel like a little kid again to step into that theater, hear the 20th Century Fox intro, and see the LucasFilm LTD. logo put onto the screen. I'm never going to get to do that again. But I digress, so it's on to the movie. If you haven't seen it yet, I'd advise against reading on, unless you wish to be spoiled.

The opening crawl is quite good.

Star Wars - Spoiler Free Reaction

8:30 AM

I really don't know where to begin. I don't think I could have asked for much more in the movie. It had action and drama. It had the right amount of camp and silly dialog (Don't forget about lines like this, "But I was going to Toschi Station to pick up some power converters," from the OT). It answered many of the questions that you would have had going in. It elevated the duel in ROTJ to be much more powerful. And it makes you look at the OT in an entirely new way. Many Star Wars fans could be upset by this, but I feel like the OT especially ANH and ROTJ benefit greatly.

Visually it was the greatest of all the movies. There were very few scenes where the special effects weren't spot on. The opening shot (almost 5 minutes with no cuts) that followed Anakin and Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighters into the battle was just amazing. The duels were spot on. About the only negatives I can give is that some of the Padme/Anakin love dialog was a little stiff and that the back story of General Grievous could have been developed more.

Less than 48 hours to go...

1:44 PM

Exciting times, don't you think? In about 30 hours I will be watching the final Star Wars movie. I don't know whether to be sad or happy. It's a very weird feeling. It has been a very long ride. Star Wars has been a huge part of my life, and it came into the world almost exactly at the same time I did. I'm one of the first generation to not know what the world is like without it. I've watched the OT more times than I care to admit. A huge portion of my childhood was spent playing with action figures, playing Star Wars video games, sleeping on Star Wars sheets and in Star Wars pajamas, and pretending to be Luke Skywalker.

I remember exactly the feeling I got in my stomach when I saw the pictures of the cast for Episode I. It was in a Waldenbooks in the Washington Park Mall in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. They had photos of Jake Llyod, Ewan McGregor, and Natalie Portman. This was before the proliferation of the internet and spoiler rumors. If you didn't subscribe to magazines, or see it on TV, or have a friend in the know, you wouldn't have even known the movies were coming.

PS3 vs XBox 1.5

1:41 PM

Have you had a chance to check out the Sony PS3 yet? I know I'm almost 28 years old and soon to be married, but video games still excite me (Which leads to a topic for another day: Am I part of the first generation who will never stop playing video games?). Having not been a huge fan of Nintendo since the originally NES (I liked the Sega Genesis versus the SNES and the PlayStation versus the N64 and Sega Saturn) and not really caring for the X-Box, it should come as no surprise to hear me say: "WOW"! The new X-Box left me under whelmed, especially with their talk of basically turning the thing into a monthly service and micro payments to buy additions to games. The PS3 has a good chance to do to the X-Box what the PS2 did to the Dream Cast, simply wipe it out. Microsoft is gambling that they can get enough of them sold from November until spring 2006 to gain a lead and get the game publishers to sign on. I don't see how they can though, especially with Sony able to spread FUD (and possibly able to back it up).
