Super Nerd!

10:02 AM

Drew McWeeny better known as Moriarty from Ain't It Cool News has just had a baby boy. Why would I post about something so trivial you ask? Especially since I think all babies are spawns of satan? Check out it's name: Toshiro Lucas McWeeny. He named his kid afer Toshiro Mifune and George Lucas. I feel safe in knowing that no matter how big of a nerd I am, there is always someone worse!

Wedding Music

11:57 AM

I've just completed the CD Kathrine and I plan on playing at our wedding reception. I must say it's pretty good. I will probably post a track listing here. But first, if you had to pick 5 songs to play at a wedding what would they be?

Wikipedia

11:45 AM

I love wikipedia. I go there every day and look at the featured article. You never know what you might learn. Today, I discovered Vanilla Ninja. So tonight, I have some songs to download!

You have to be careful though. That got me interested in what other bands might be listed. Which lead me to here and here. Of course then I had to follow some of the links in those pages. I found this article on shoegazing and this list of shoegazing bands. I learned that there was a genre of music called Twee and read up on Alt Country.

I could have wasted a whole day just following the links from article to article.

Freaking Awesome!

10:27 AM

I should just copy the links of the day from the sports guy's world every afternoon. They're that good. But that probably wouldn't be ethical. I couldn't help but link to this. Randy Moss, Snoop Dogg, and Toby Keith? On a bass boat... together! I want to watch that. It's must see TV.

It's freaking Hot!!

9:54 AM

I'm in Oklahoma and it's hot. I got off the plane at close to midnight and I was already hot. I have to go outdoors soon. It's going to suck. I don't know how much I'll be posting the next few days as I'll be busy here.

Stathead

I'm a horrible teacher; but when i get excited about something, I want everyone else to know about it. I have always loved baseball statistics, unfortunately it wasn't until the last few years that I realized there was a whole community of people with the same love. I just completed a great book that is a wonderful introduction to the field: Curve Ball, by Jim Albert and Jay Bennett. If you have anything more than a passing interest in baseball you should definitely check it out.

If you don't have time for that, I'm going to attempt to give a short primer with some relevant links. I'm linking to Baseball Prospectus for all these articles. They are a wealth of information, unfortunately they make you pay for all the good stuff and don't often even tell you how to calculate their formulas.

Forecasting
Amazingly enough you can forecast what is going to happen in a season pretty accurately for both individual players and teams.

Baseball in full swing!

12:49 PM

Baseball season is in full swing, and I just realized how much I love this time of year. To get you in the mood you should check out some light hearted
stories I've found before I get to serious on you.

The first is a Slate article on The Bad News Bears. This is a highly under rated movie. It probably in the top 5 sports movies of all time. And it's no worse than the 3rd best baseball movie I've seen. I'm not sure how I feel about the upcoming remake though. It has the potential to be awful, but picking Richard Linkletter to direct and Billy Bob Thorton to star is just about perfect. Only time will tell.

Next, if you've ever wondered what it is like to throw a no hitter on acid; look no further than this story in the Dallas Observer. I can't even do it justice with a description, you'll just have to read it.

Now for my true love, baseball statistics. I think this deserves it's own post, so check back soon.

Am I a nerd, or what?

11:28 AM

Look at this thread I participated in on slashdot today. I actually took the time to prove we couldn't affect the moon's orbit by removing mass. Am I really that starved for math problems to work? I actually got giddy this weekend when I had to figure out the best way to print our wedding invitations on a page, so that I would have to make the fewest amount of cuts to make them.

Maybe I should get a math book at the library today and just work problems on the flight home!

WTF!?

2:36 PM

I'm just on an IP role today. Copyrights strike again! Is it really a big problem that people are downloading images on the web and taking them to photolabs to be printed? I wouldn't think so. The only reason I can think of as to why someone would do that is to get a 8 x 10 or larger of something they found on the internet. However, for the printed photo to look good; you're going to want it in a resolution like 3264 x 2448. I'm not sure about you, but I don't know where one goes to download pictures in that resolution without the artist's permission. If someone brings in a CD or memory card that has a picture in that resolution chances are they really took it. About the only way I could see an average person stealing an image of that high-quality would be if they already had a printed copy, scanned it in with a VERY HIGH QUALITY scanner, photoshopped it a bit to clean it up, and then brought it in to the photolab.
