I've read a few things lately that have me asking the same question. The first was a
column in Spin Magazine containing a contract promising that you would never stop
buying albums from your favorite band. It made the point that, without fail, bands
continue to put out albums; but people just stop caring about them. The second was
a story about a classic rock cruise by Chuck Klosterman. Basically for $3000 you
got to take a Caribbean Carnival cruise with REO Speedwagon, Journey, and Styx, and
hear performances by each on the ship. Chuck noted that many of the passengers
asked the same question, "Why do good old bands put out new music that's no good?"
You can see the phenomenon yourself at any concert by a band who's popularity has
waned. Everyone sits politely while the new material is played, but then goes crazy
for the old stuff. The last thing was this
article by the Sports Guy, Bill Simmons.

Kathrine has just informed me that my website sucks because I never update it. I am
going to work hard to rectify that. I vow to make sure I make at least one post a
week from now on, hopefully more.
You may have noticed that I added some things to the site. You can now search
through the news, comments, and the rants. If there is a desire to search any more
of the page, I can add that funtionality. The search isn't very powerful as of yet.
It does a case insensitive search of the exact string you put in. At some point
I'll upgrade it to take things like AND and OR and be a bit more powerful.
One of the reasons my posts have been lacking is I've been fiddling with my
computer. I've decided to ditch Mandrake and am now running Ubuntu Linux. It's
taking some getting used to, and I still don't have everything worked out, but I do
like it better so far. In other computer news, I'm buying an LCD monitor, so that I
can pass my old trusty tube down to Kathrine.

You may or may not have noticed, but I have bought a domain name. My site is now
available at http://arbeck.net. Of
course the old url will still work indefinately, so you have plenty of time to
change any links or bookmarks you may have.
Also, if you didn't already know, Kathrine and I are getting married. Rather than
bore you with the details here, I've set up an entire website for the wedding. Hope you enjoy.

As some of my readers... or possibly the only two I have ...have discovered. My Top 5's for 2004 are online. I plan
on having a much longer post sometime soon. But I'm preparing a major server
overhaul, so I've gotten lazy.

God I'm bad... I haven't had time to post in a while. Busy at work, busy at home,
going to bed at 8:00 at night. I'm pretty lame I guess.
I did find some two interesting articles on copyright you should read. The first is
an op-ed
Lawrence Lessig wrote for the Washington Post. The second is a much longer but
very
eloquent piece in the Financial Times.

I've been lazy on my postings. I plan on writting some things soon, but until then
read
this. It's a little tounge in cheek, but it sets a nice progressive agenda.

You may have noticed the music section I added. Right now, it only is a list of
everything I have ripped on my computer. It's 200+ albums, but between Kathrine and
I we probably have 200 more, not to mention her vinyl. Eventually, those will be
there too. I'm going to work on the wishlist this weekend, and it should be up
soon. Although that's more for me than for you. I have the hardest time keeping
track of the albums I want, and usually end up wandering the record store aimlessly
when I go. Finally, I'm going to switch up the music page a bit so that you will be
able to see the number of reviews next to the band name. It will also have a '*'
next to the name if a review has been added/updated in the last 10 days. That way,
you can just bookmark that page, and see what has changed. Of course that assumes
you care, which I'm sure you don't.

I'm finally doing an update. I've been busy, and then I was sick, and I spent the
majority of time I should have spent updating working on my latest rant. This one
is all about Intellectual
Property, and I hope you all read it and leave me feedback here. I welcome
critisicm, and can revise the rant if needs be.
I hope you have noticed all the new pictures on the site. If you haven't, go take a
look.
Also, I'm planning on adding a section on music. It will basically be a list of
albums I own, a wishlist for new ones, and eventually reviews on everything that I
own.

This
comic is laugh out loud hillarious. I hope you feel the same way.
In other news, I'm working hard to do a major site overhaul. You may or may not
notice the changes, but basically it lets me do almost all site maitenance remotely;
which should allow for more frequent updates. I should have everything finished up
by this evening. Once that is done, expect a flurry of new postings including some
new pictures, new news, and some new rants and raves.
